A Family-Run Brickwork Firm in Kent

Small team, narrow trade, long memory. We have built our name on jobs people are still happy with years later — which in this trade is the only advertising that works.

Who we are

Built on skill, trusted across Kent

J&R Brickwork is a family-run brickwork and paving contractor based in Staplehurst, in the Kent Weald between Maidstone and Cranbrook. We lay brick and we lay paving. That is the entire business, and keeping it that narrow is a deliberate choice.

It means we are not spreading ourselves across six trades and mastering none of them. It means the person who quotes your job is one of the people who builds it. And it means when we say we can match your brick, or that your retaining wall needs drainage behind it, or that your chimney needs rebuilding rather than repointing, that opinion is worth something.

Most of our work comes from people who saw a wall we built for a neighbour, or from builders who have used us before and call us back. We are fine with that being how the business grows.

How we work

Three things we will not compromise on

  • Straight answers

    If a job does not need doing yet, or needs a different trade, or needs an engineer, we tell you. It costs us a quote occasionally and it has never cost us a customer.

  • Safe, tidy sites

    Materials stacked out of the way, cuts made away from the neighbours where we can, and the site swept at the end of each day rather than at the end of the job.

  • The invisible work

    Footings dug deep enough, sub-bases compacted properly, damp proof courses respected. Nobody ever sees any of it, and it decides whether the job lasts.

Our patch

Rooted in the Weald, working across the South East

Staplehurst puts us within half an hour of most of mid-Kent and inside an hour of the coast, the Medway towns and the Sussex border. It also means we know the brick around here: the soft reds and multi-stocks of the Weald, the yellow stocks that take over towards north Kent and London, the ragstone that turns up in older boundary walls around Maidstone.

That local knowledge is not sentimentality. It is the difference between an extension that reads as part of the house and one that reads as an extension.

Beyond Kent we work across south Essex, into London — where a lot of our repointing and restoration work is — and west into Surrey.
